Clinical Services

We deliver clinical services through Baptist Health and its affiliated hospital network. Our department ensures patients receive comprehensive, high-quality surgical treatment within a well-coordinated health care framework.

Education & Training

The Department of Surgical Sciences provides comprehensive surgical education across all levels of medical training. Through a robust curriculum that includes Grand Rounds, surgical simulation workshops, and clinical rotations, students develop a foundation in surgical knowledge, patient care and procedural skills. Hands-on experiences in preoperative, operative and postoperative settings help students build clinical reasoning, communication and professionalism while working alongside faculty and surgical teams.

In addition to core clerkships, the department promotes student engagement in research, electives and regional surgical conferences. Surgical education is further supported by state-of-the-art simulation labs and mentorship opportunities. The department also serves as an academic resource for the FIU/Baptist Health General Surgery Program, strengthening the bridge between undergraduate and graduate medical education.

Research

Our physicians and scientists have significantly contributed to advancing the understanding of both science and the art of surgery. Our focus is on translational research—taking findings from the lab and applying them directly to patient care. A key driver of our innovation is our close partnership with the Biomedical Engineering Department at the FIU College of Engineering and Computing. Together, we’ve developed several investigational drugs and techniques in molecular imaging and therapy. This strong collaboration between our physicians and scientists allows us to enhance the quality of care we deliver and fuels ongoing research for tackling the most complex surgical challenges.

Faculty & Staff

Our faculty and staff bring specialized expertise across various key areas of surgery. Their clinical experience, coupled with their academic leadership, plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of physicians. This commitment ensures that we remain at the forefront of medical education and surgical practice.
