Pathology

Vision

Our Department has a proud history of training pathologists who have been prepared for practice in academic institutions, community hospitals and reference laboratories. Our goal going forward is to help insure that each student is committed to medical excellence and has the ability to pursue a practice lifetime of self-motivated continuing medical education and improvement.

Mission

Pathology is the study of disease. We will advance our knowledge of disease through research teaching and service in order to become a respected and renowned department on both a national and international level.

We provide excellence in teaching, service and research in pathology to the students, clinicians and patients of FIU, and the community as a whole.

Research

The Department believes that research is an integral part of medical education. We encourage our students to get involved early in their careers, predominately through clinically-oriented research, that can lead to poster presentations, abstracts and peer-reviewed publications. Basic science research is also emphasized through collaboration with all other departments at the university.

Education and training

The Department participates in medical education throughout all four years. Our Pathology and Infectious Disease course leads the way during the first year followed by pathology education in every science course in Period 2. Pathology electives and selectives are available during both Period 3 and 4.
