Dr. Ruth Jackson was the first female orthopedist in the U.S. She was inspired to enter the field while working with polio patients under the guidance of Dr. Arthur Steindler at the University of Iowa. In 1932, she opened her office in Dallas, Texas. The following year, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons was founded. All practicing orthopedists were allowed to join — except Dr. Jackson. Undaunted, she took and passed the Board Exam in 1937, becoming the first woman certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the first woman admitted to the AAOS. During her 57 years in practice, Dr Jackson authored numerous publications in medical journals and the medical classic Cervical Syndrome based on her experience treating over 15,000 neck injuries. She was chief of the non-school orthopedic service at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she established an orthopedic residency.
