Dimitroff Lab

Charles J. Dimitroff studies the role of glycans in cancer progression, metastasis and anti-tumor immunity. His research focuses on translational glycobiology, a field that examines how glycans contribute to disease development and how this knowledge can be applied to improve disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. He has expertise in cancer glycobiology and tumor immunology, with a particular interest in understanding how glycan-dependent mechanisms influence tumor growth, immune regulation and responses to cancer immunotherapies. His research aims to identify new strategies for targeting glycan-driven pathways to improve outcomes for patients with cancer.

About the lab

The Dimitroff Lab investigates how glycans influence cancer progression, metastasis and anti-tumor immunity. Current research focuses on understanding how glycans on melanoma cells promote metastasis, targeting glycans on multiple myeloma cells to enhance cancer immunotherapy, engineering glycans on CAR-T cells to support durable anti-cancer responses, and identifying small-molecule inhibitors of immunosuppressive galectins to strengthen anti-cancer immunity.

The lab trains the next generation of biomedical researchers and prepares trainees for graduate and medical schools, residency programs, postdoctoral fellowships, and careers as independent faculty members or staff scientists. Laboratory members gain hands-on research experience while developing the skills needed for academic and professional advancement.
