He serves as preceptor for graduate students seeking geriatrics/gerontology-oriented clinical research, and, in strategic partnership with Leon Medical Centers, he participates in the planning and coordination of the Leon Medical Centers Annual Geriatrics Conference, a major College of Medicine continuing medical education (CME) program that provides state-of-art updates on current topics relevant for physicians involved with the healthcare of older adults. Chaves’ scholarly activities include collaborative research with Cardiovascular Health Study network investigators.
Before coming to FIU, Chaves served as the director of the Epidemiology of Aging program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and co-investigator and/or principal investigator of the Hopkins multicenter for National Institutes of Health-funded population-based studies of older adults. And he holds an appointment as adjunct associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology.
Research Interests
Dr. Chaves’ research focuses on the epidemiology of geriatrics syndromes, including physical frailty, mobility disability, and falls; age-related chronic diseases, and outpatient-centered health services research in Medicare beneficiaries.
