About us
Breast cancer is manageable and preventable, especially with early detection. Unfortunately, research has shown that minority women in South Florida seek preventative breast health care at lower rates than do their non-minority counterparts.
The Mobile Mammography Initiative (MMI), formerly Mammography Art Initiative (MAI), was established at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU in 2011 to address this disparity by improving access to affordable breast health services and breast health education for underserved women in Miami-Dade County. Through the production of annual art show and other fundraising events over the last ten years, over $90,000 has been raised to contributed to mammogram sponsorship and longitudinal care for thousands of women across South Florida.
In conjunction with the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP™ program, MMI recruits patients for referral to our state-of-the-art Linda Fenner 3D Mobile Mammography Center. Equipped with a HOLOGIC Genius 3D Mammography Machine, high-resolution multi-slice breast images are created via tomosynthesis to provide optimal diagnostic acuity. As a mobile screening unit, we can bring this service directly to women in neighborhoods across Miami-Dade. Our mission is to identify underserved women who would benefit from this service and who otherwise would be unable to seek necessary breast health care.
The MMI has been inundated with support from local artists, businesses, and the healthcare community. Each year, we continue to expand as a program and grow our art show. Through our efforts, we hope and aim to one day eliminate the cultural disparities of women’s health.
