
After serving as interim since August 2024, Dr. Shweta Akhouri is now assistant dean for Clinical Education at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
During her interim tenure, Akhouri provided steady leadership through a critical accreditation year. She led policy reviews for the third- and fourth-year curriculum, implemented process improvements, and developed new tools to support the success of clinical students and preceptors.
An associate professor in the Department of Medical Education, Akhouri brings extensive experience across the clinical education continuum. She has directed the Family Medicine Clerkship since 2023 and chaired the Clinical Education Committee since 2024. Her dedication was recognized with the 2025 FIU Medicine Excellence in Clerkship Direction Award.
In her new role, Akhouri will oversee the third- and fourth-year M.D. curriculum, support clerkship leadership and teaching faculty, and collaborate with the Office of Medical Education and clinical affiliates to deliver a cohesive, high-quality clinical learning experience.
