Dr. Sarah Stumbar confirmed to lead the Office of Student Affairs at FIU Medicine

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has named Dr. Sarah Stumbar to the permanent role of associate dean for Student Affairs. She'd been serving in the position as interim since July 2024. The Office of Student Affairs supports students from matriculation through graduation with services in academic advising, career development, and wellness programming.

Stumbar, an associate professor in the Department of Medical Education, joined the College of Medicine in 2015. Her prior leadership roles at the college include assistant dean for Clinical Education and chair of the Clinical Education Committee.

A board-certified family physician, Stumbar earned her medical degree from the SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health in sociomedical sciences from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. She completed her social and family medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

She is a nationally recognized educator and scholar, honored for her work in teaching, humanism, and curriculum innovation. In 2024, she received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award and the Hippocratic Award—two of the college's highest honors. Her academic work includes publications and leadership in narrative medicine, reproductive health education, and student wellness.
