Step 3 – Clinical Clerkships
Step 3 includes core clinical clerkships in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, neurology and surgery. Students work under the supervision of our dedicated and highly skilled faculty across all core specialties and sub-specialties. Through affiliations across the community, they gain exposure to diverse patients and clinical settings at multiple hospitals, outpatient clinics and private practices.
During this Step, students actively participate in patient care, applying the skills and knowledge gained in Steps 1 and 2 of the curriculum. Their learning is enriched through simulation, case-based didactics, virtual cases and other experiential activities and assignments. In the Internal Medicine and Surgery Clerkships, students also have selective opportunities to explore specific sub-specialty areas.
Throughout Step 3, students continue their involvement in the Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP program and participate in a longitudinal course focused on self-directed learning and the clinical integration of basic and health systems science.
Step 4 – Advanced Clinicals
Step 4 focuses on advanced medical study and exploring specialty areas to help students shape their postgraduate plans. Students create individualized schedules with rotations tailored to their long-term career goals.
Step 4 requirements include:
- A two-week career advising and professional development course
- A two-week geriatrics rotation
- A four-week emergency medicine rotation
- One four-week sub-internship
- Electives
- A transition-to-residency capstone course
Students also continue their participation in the NeighborhoodHELP program throughout Step 4.
