Richard D. Ball has over 40 years of experience as a practicing physician assistant and over 20 years in academia. In addition to his leadership role in the Master in Physician Assistant Studies Program (MPAS), Ball teaches MPAS students in the Clinical Medicine I and Integration into Clinical Concepts courses. 

Ball’s clinical experience has been primarily in emergency medicine and international medicine while working as a government contractor with the U.S. Department of Defense. He has worked in American Samoa, Egypt, Kuwait, and Iraq. Ball also served as a U.S. Air Force medical corpsman during the Vietnam War.

Before joining FIU, Ball held academic and leadership roles at several institutions, including serving as program director for the Lenoir-Rhyne University PA Program in Hickory, North Carolina, and the Ohio State University PA Program. His professional experience includes working as medical staff at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital and Clinic in Pittsburgh, as a neurosurgical PA at Wayne State Medical Center in Detroit, as a private family medicine practitioner in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and as a health inspector in Louisiana and Florida.
