The FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Baptist Health are expanding advanced training opportunities for physicians with the launch of four new joint fellowship programs across key medical specialties, all set to begin in July 2027.
FIU/Baptist Health Thoracic Surgery Fellowship
This two-year fellowship program provides fellows with hands-on experience in a wide range of thoracic surgical cases, from routine procedures to highly complex operations. The program accepts two fellows per year and offers training in both fundamental and advanced techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Dr. Joseph McGinn serves as program director and is chief of cardiac surgery at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Dr. John DeRosimo is associate program director and a thoracic surgeon at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, specializing in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
FIU/Baptist Health Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship
This three-year program is led by Dr. Marco Ruiz Andia, a medical oncologist at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute who specializes in hematologic malignancies, bone marrow transplantation, geriatric oncology and palliative care. Accepting six fellows per year, the program provides comprehensive clinical training in malignant and benign hematologic and oncologic conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Fellows gain hands-on experience with solid tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and bone marrow transplant while working closely with board-certified specialists.
FIU/Baptist Health Critical Care Medicine Fellowship
A two-year program that accepts four fellows per year and provides comprehensive training in managing critically ill patients across medical/surgical, cardiovascular, and neurological intensive care units. Under the leadership of Dr. Laiqua Khalid, program director, and Dr. Andrew Calzadilla, assistant program director—both pulmonologists with expertise in critical care—fellows gain advanced clinical judgment and procedural skills, including ventilator management, hemodynamic support, and bronchoscopy.
FIU/Baptist Health Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship
This three-year program accepts four fellows per year and provides comprehensive, hands-on training for managing both common and complex cardiovascular conditions through high-volume inpatient and longitudinal outpatient experiences. Under the leadership of Dr. Marcus St. John, program director and interventional cardiologist at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, and Dr. Socrates Kakoulides, associate program director and chief imaging officer at Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care, fellows gain expertise across all cardiology subspecialties.
