FIU Medicine appoints Dr. John P. Diaz as OB-GYN Chair

John P. Diaz, M.D., new chair of the Department of OB-GYN at FIU Med

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has appointed Dr. John P. Diaz as the new chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A board-certified gynecologic oncologist, Diaz brings extensive clinical experience, academic leadership, and a forward-looking vision to the role.

Diaz currently serves as chief of gynecologic oncology and medical director of robotic surgery at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Under his leadership, the Institute has developed one of the largest robotic surgery programs in the nation, performing more than 85,000 procedures annually. He also chairs the Robotics and Innovations in Surgery Subcommittee and is the lead physician for clinical trials in gynecological oncology.

“Dr. Diaz’s expertise and commitment to innovation will further strengthen our department and help shape its next phase of growth,” said Juan C. Cendan, dean of the College of Medicine.

Diaz earned his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, followed by a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in obstetrics, gynecology, and gynecologic oncology.

Diaz succeeds Dr. Manuel Peñalver, who has led the department with integrity and compassion for many years. Under Peñalver’s leadership, the department expanded its academic programs, fostered a strong culture of mentorship, and upheld a deep commitment to advancing women’s health.

“We are deeply grateful for Dr. Peñalver’s many contributions to our students, faculty, and patients,” said Dean Cendan.
