We provide our students with diverse interprofessional clinical experiences across many clinical sites exposing them to practical health care situations alongside our faculty.
Faculty support students through mentoring, involving them in research and other scholarly activities, and helping to develop their clinical skills and professionalism.
Students will become familiarized with a range of health care systems, including large and integrated systems, community hospitals, federally qualified and safety-net hospitals, and the emerging population health delivery model.

- Baptist Health South Florida
Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF) is the largest not-for-profit health care organization in the area. Affiliates of Baptist Health include Baptist Hospital of Miami, South Miami Hospital, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, Baptist Children's Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Mariners Hospital and West Kendall Baptist Hospital. BHSF has a dedicated medical staff of over 4,000 physicians in virtually all specialties, many with national and international reputations.
In Periods 1 and 2, students may elect to rotate through an Emergency Medicine experience at Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital. In Periods 3 and 4, Baptist Health South Florida facilities serve as key learning sites for Internal Medicine and its subspecialties, Surgery and its subspecialties, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine and Neurology. In Period 4, Baptist Health South Florida also serves as an important site for sub-internship and elective experiences in selected specialties.
- Broward Health
Emphasizing wellness education and disease prevention, Broward Health is one of the 10 largest health systems in the U.S. Broward Health currently operates more than 30 healthcare facilities, including Broward General Medical Center, North Broward Medical Center, Imperial Point Medical Center, Coral Springs Medical Center, Chris Evert Children's Hospital, and Broward Health Weston.
In Periods 3 and 4, Broward Health serves as a key learning site for Psychiatry, Internal Medicine with its subspecialties, and Surgery with its subspecialties. Opportunities in other selected specialties, including Pediatrics, may also be available during Period 4.
- Cleveland Clinic Florida
Cleveland Clinic Florida (CCF) is a nonprofit multi-specialty medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. CCF includes Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, and Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital as well as five hospitals and numerous outpatient centers in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River Counties. CCF’s Weston Hospital ranked #1 in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area according to U.S. News & World Report’s “2020-21 Best Hospitals” rankings, the third consecutive year the hospital has received the top ranking.
In Period 3, Cleveland Clinic Florida serves as a key learning site for Neurology. In Period 4, the CCF is a site for the Internal Medicine Sub-Internship and offers elective opportunities in several other subspecialties.
- Citrus Health Network
Citrus Health Network, Inc. is a Federally Qualified Health Center and Community Mental Health Center that has been serving the local community since 1979. Now one of the largest providers of behavioral health services in South Florida, Citrus delivers services across the spectrum of mental and behavioral health needs for clients of all ages. As a Federally Qualified Health Center that also offers primary care services, Citrus takes a total wellness approach with each client, addressing the whole person by integrating a broad range of health services and community-based programs. For more than three decades Citrus has been a teaching health center that has created a stimulating learning environment for Professionals in Training across behavioral health and primary care disciplines. Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine serves as the academic affiliate for Citrus’ Psychiatry Residency Program and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program. Citrus has several health center locations around Miami-Dade County, as well as programs in Broward County.
In Period 3, Citrus Health serves as a key learning site for the Psychiatry Clerkship. In Period 4, Citrus Health provides multiple Psychiatry elective opportunities.
- Jackson Health System (Public Health Trust)
Jackson Health System is a nonprofit academic medical system offering world-class care to any person who walks through its doors. Governed by the Public Health Trust, a team of citizen volunteers acting on behalf of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, Jackson Health System ensures that all residents of Miami-Dade County receive a single high standard of care regardless of their ability to pay. It is one of the United States’ largest public hospital systems and among the largest graduate medical education programs. An integrated healthcare delivery system, Jackson Health System consists of six hospitals spread across three campuses, anchored by the flagship Jackson Memorial Hospital alongside Jackson South Medical Center, Jackson North Medical Center, Holtz Children’s Hospital/The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial, Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital, Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial, a network of UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers, multiple primary care and specialty care centers, two long-term care nursing facilities, and the Corrections Health Services serving Miami-Dade’s jail inmates.

- Leon Medical Centers
Beginning in 1996 with a single site, the Leon Center subsequently expanded to seven centers around Miami which provide primary care, specialist care and a wide array of laboratory and outpatient medical services. Leon Medical Centers is Miami’s leading healthcare services provider serving Medicare patients. Founded with the intent of providing quality healthcare to the Hispanic Medicare population, Leon Medical Centers fulfills its promise to the community by offering personalized medical attention in a timely, efficient manner with the utmost care and sensitivity to its patients' specific healthcare needs.
Students rotate at Leon Centers in Period 2 as part of their Geriatrics Primary Care preceptorship.
- Memorial Healthcare System
Memorial Healthcare System is one of the largest public hospital networks in the U.S. It serves southern Broward County and has a network of 6 Hospitals and 15 Clinics, including Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional South, Memorial Pembroke, Memorial West, Memorial Miramar and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospitals together with a number of ambulatory sites. Memorial has a reputation as one of Florida's leading healthcare systems and is supported by a distinguished medical staff, the vast majority of which are board certified or board qualified in their specialties. Memorial follows the patient- and family-centered care model, which holds that building more effective partnerships among healthcare providers, patients and families can lead to healthcare services being improved upon.

- Miami VA Healthcare System
The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated health care system in the U.S. The Miami VA is an accredited comprehensive medical provider that provides general medical, surgical, inpatient and outpatient mental health services to Veterans across Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. VHA Miami includes an AIDS/HIV center, a prosthetic treatment center, spinal cord injury rehabilitative center, and Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC). The System operates 372 hospital beds, is a recognized Chest Pain Center, and is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Spinal Cord Injury research and Substance Abuse treatment.
In Period 3, VHA Miami serves a key learning site for Internal Medicine and its subspecialties, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Surgery. In Period 4, VHA Miami offers sub-internship and elective opportunities in selected specialties.
- Mount Sinai Medical Center
Founded in 1949, Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC) is South Florida's largest private, independent, nonprofit teaching hospital. The medical center is committed to its mission of providing high quality health care to our diverse community enhanced through teaching, research, charity care and financial responsibility. With 11 locations, including 3 emergency centers, across Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, Mount Sinai is committed to providing access for patients who seek quality, comprehensive and compassionate care. The institution trains 170 resident physicians each year. Residency programs include anesthesiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, podiatric medicine and surgery, psychiatry, radiology, general surgery and urology. Fellowship programs include advanced emergency medicine ultrasound, breast imaging, cardiology, interventional cardiology and surgical pathology.

- Nicklaus Children's Hospital
Nicklaus Children's Hospital (NCH) is South Florida's only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children, and is home to the largest pediatric teaching program in the Southeastern United States. The 309-bed hospital has almost 800 attending physicians and over 475 pediatric subspecialists. NCH is renowned for excellence in all aspects of pediatric health care from birth through adolescence and is routinely ranked as one of the nation’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” by the U.S. News & World Report.
In Periods 3 and 4, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital serves as FIU HWCOM’s primary learning site for Pediatrics and its subspecialties.
