Adel Nefzi's research focuses on developing libraries of small molecules, peptides and peptidomimetics for phenotypic screening. It involves identifying effective compounds through deconvolution, optimizing hits into leads via structure-activity relationships and designing "drug-like" molecules using a target-based approach integrated with molecular modeling.
His work supports the scale-up of processes for in vitro and in vivo efficacy models and includes analytical chemistry for drug stability, solubility and structural determinations.

About the Lab
The Nefzi Lab focuses on organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry to advance drug discovery. For over 25 years, the team has designed and synthesized diverse libraries of small molecules, peptides, and peptidomimetics to identify biologically active compounds and promising drug leads. This work has contributed to advances in human health, including cancer, inflammation, infectious diseases and central nervous system disorders.
Our collection includes more than 35 million compounds and over 10,000 drug-like molecules available for high-throughput screening. The lab has been supported by major federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging, and the National Science Foundation.
