The FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine) and Baptist Health are expanding their graduate medical education offerings with new residency programs in anesthesiology and obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN).
The four-year programs are now recruiting and will welcome their first residents in July 2027, creating new opportunities for physicians to complete specialty training in South Florida while helping address the region’s growing need for physicians.
FIU/Baptist Health Anesthesiology Residency
The anesthesiology program will train physicians to care for patients before, during and after surgery. Residents will gain experience across a broad range of specialties, including general and regional anesthesia, obstetric and pediatric anesthesia, cardiothoracic and neuroanesthesia, pain management and critical care.
The curriculum also incorporates simulation training, research, teaching and quality improvement initiatives. Dr. Michael Carreras, assistant professor at FIU Medicine and board-certified anesthesiologist at Baptist Health, serves as program director.
FIU/Baptist Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
Residents in the OB-GYN program will train to care for women through every stage of life, from routine preventive care to childbirth and the management of complex gynecologic conditions.
Training includes outpatient care, labor and delivery, gynecologic surgery and subspecialty services while caring for a diverse patient population across Baptist Health South Florida’s clinical network. Residents will also have opportunities to participate in research, teaching and mentorship. Dr. Veronica Alvarez-Galiana, assistant professor at FIU Medicine and board-certified OB-GYN at Baptist Health, serves as program director.
