The Florida Academy of Family Physicians named Dr. Shweta Akhouri, assistant dean for clinical education and associate professor at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, its 2025 Young Leader. The award honors her outstanding service to the academy and her dedication to family medicine.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the privilege of practicing family medicine and teaching it every day – a role that continually inspires me,” said Akhouri. “I owe this to the unwavering support of my colleagues who motivate me to grow and lead with purpose.”

As assistant dean for clinical education, Akhouri oversees the design, implementation and evaluation of clinical training for third- and fourth-year medical students. She collaborates with faculty, clerkship directors and clinical sites to ensure students receive high-quality, hands-on experiences that prepare them for residency and beyond.

Akhouri serves as regional governor for the American Medical Women’s Association, leading initiatives that promote mentorship and professional development for women in medicine across the Southeast.

She previously served as the College’s Family Medicine Clerkship Director, where she designed a comprehensive program focused on preventive care and the management of chronic illnesses.
