Off-Campus: Educational Conferences, Workshops, and Extramural Online Faculty Development

Through the departments of their appointment and through the Office of Medical Education (OME), funds are available to support paid FIU faculty to attend extramural conferences and workshops aimed at developing their skills as educators, and/or providing opportunities to present their own educational scholarship. OME funding decisions are based on both curricular need and the potential contribution of participation to the faculty member’s career.

To apply for funding from OME to attend an outside conference or workshop, a completed request form should be submitted to Ms. Kelly Bounchareune (sbouncha@fiu.edu), and copied to Dr. Vivian Obeso (vobeso@fiu.edu).

Extramural Online Courses

The Office of Learning and Teaching emails faculty periodically with information on several online courses and webinars pertinent to medical education. Some of these charge a fee for a certificate of completion. If you are considering a certificate-earning course with a fee, the Office of Learning and Teaching maintains a small reserve of funds to cover these.

We strongly recommend one repeated offering from the online provider Coursera – Instructional Methods in Health Professions Education. The course provides a robust overview that has proven invaluable to the many faculty who come to us with little or no prior formal training in medical education design and delivery. We send out an announcement to faculty each time this course opens for new registration.

Another highly recommended online set of offerings comes from NBME U- the National Board of Medical Examiners set of interactive modules on assessment. These require a small fee. You can contact Learning and Teaching about funding availability at comlearn@fiu.edu.
