A psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and educator, Rothe specializes in the mental health of immigrants, refugees and minority populations and has earned international recognition for his expertise. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He served as president of the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis from 2024 to 2026.

Rothe also holds adjunct academic appointments and collaborates on research with FIU’s Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, and Cuban Research Institute.
