Leadership Announced for New Clinical Departments at FIU Medicine

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has named chairs for four newly established clinical departments. These appointments reflect the college’s commitment to academic excellence, clinical innovation, and strategic collaboration with Baptist Health.

Dr. Tom C. Nguyen, a minimally invasive heart surgeon, has been appointed chair of the new Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. A professor at FIU Medicine, he also serves as director of minimally invasive valve surgery, chief medical executive, and the Barry T. Katzen Endowed Chair at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute.

Dr. Michael W. McDermott, a neurosurgeon, has been appointed chair of the new Department of Neurosciences. He is a professor at the college and serves as chief medical executive and the Irma & Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. McDermott previously led the college’s Division of Neuroscience.

Dr. Minesh P. Mehta, a radiation oncologist, has been named chair of the new Department of Oncological Sciences. A professor at the college, he also serves as chief of radiation oncology, deputy director, and the John and Mary Lou Dasburg Endowed Chair in Radiation Oncology at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Mehta previously chaired the college’s Department of Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Geoffrey D. Young, a specialist in head and neck surgery, has been appointed chair of the new Department of Surgical Sciences. He is an FIU Medicine associate professor and serves as chief of head and neck cancer surgery at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Young previously served as interim chair of the former Department of Surgery.
