Jerry Edward Chipuk's research centers on understanding how mitochondrial biology influences cancer development and progression, with a particular focus on melanoma and hematologic malignancies. In his role as chair of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, he aims to strengthen the college’s research infrastructure and expand collaborations with clinical partners to help accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into real-world patient care.
Before joining FIU in 2026, Chipuk was a tenured professor of oncological sciences and dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and associate director of the National Cancer Institute-designated Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center.
Chipuk has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, maintained National Institutes of Health funding and mentored dozens of trainees at multiple career stages. He has also established interdisciplinary collaborations that connect basic science discoveries with clinical and translational research.
