Developing Future Physicians

Based at Baptist Hospital of Miami, the Internal Medicine Residency emphasizes patient- and family-centered, high-quality, high-value care while fostering a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, teamwork, and lifelong learning. Internal Medicine residents are fully integrated into the care of adult patients throughout the facility and the adjacent primary care clinic.

Our comprehensive, academically rigorous education is rooted in the ACGME Core Competencies and provides opportunities for residents to participate in research, quality improvement, advocacy and health care administration. Our innovative and dedicated faculty, state-of-the-art training facilities and strong institutional support prepare our graduates to practice as primary care physicians or hospitalists or to continue subspecialty training.

Curriculum

Our program curriculum incorporates a block schedule, alternating between four weeks of inpatient rotations and two weeks of electives, subspecialties or outpatient care. During inpatient rotations, residents have three half days in their continuity clinic and one half day for wellness, ensuring balance and reducing burnout.

  • Program Highlights

    Simulation Education

Our program uses simulated patient encounters to help residents build complex patient care skills in a risk-free environment, starting from internship orientation. We provide high-quality simulation devices for internal medicine procedures and point-of-care ultrasound training in our new, cutting-edge three-story simulation center on campus.

    Research and Quality Improvement

Research and scholarship are key components of our program. We match all incoming residents with faculty mentors based on their research interests and provide them with protected time for scholarly work. A structured research and quality improvement curriculum guides all the residents in completing meaningful projects aligned with hospital initiatives.

    Physician Well-Being

Our program is dedicated to fostering an environment where residents can thrive. We provide residents with ample workspace, a dedicated GME lounge and private call rooms. Residents also benefit from noon conferences and small group coaching sessions, focusing on self-care and reflective practices that promote well-being at work and home. PGY1 residents also attend an annual wellness retreat.

    Procedure Team

This two-week rotation for PGY2s offers hands-on training in procedures commonly performed by internists. Dedicated hospitalists train residents on central venous access, thoracentesis, paracentesis and lumbar puncture initially in simulation and subsequently at the bedside.

    Academic Conference

Our lecture series is designed to effectively prepare residents for clinical practice in internal medicine as well as for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification exam. Activities include morning reports, Grand Rounds, Journal Club and a daily noon conference series based on the ABIM Blueprint.

A highlight of our program is the IM 101 series for all new PGY1 in July to teach and reinforce high-yield clinical care topics. Additionally, many of our rotations have specialty-specific conferences that welcome residents, such as Tumor Board or Heart Team meetings.
