Dr. Unwalla’s laboratory focuses on the role of small RNA molecules called microRNAs in promoting diseases attributed to inflammation. Specifically, the research focuses on lung inflammation in people living with HIV and in cigarette smokers as well as brain inflammation in Alzheimer’s disease. MicroRNAs regulate the expression of multiple genes and are often dysregulated themselves in response to diseases and environmental stimuli. This leads to the deviant expression of genes that are regulated by these microRNAs. The laboratory identifies these pathways with the goal of testing therapeutic leads to reduce the severity of inflammation in these diseases.
