Franco Lab

Maria Franco is a redox biologist whose work focuses on how the oxidative environment regulates cellular processes governing growth and death in nervous system pathologies. She is a tenured associate professor at FIU Medicine.

About the Lab

The Franco lab is an internationally recognized, highly collaborative research group uncovering how oxidative stress generated during chronic inflammation rewires molecular pathways to drive neurological disease, including neurodegeneration and cancer.

The lab focuses on a transformative concept: specific proteins, when modified by tyrosine nitration, acquire new disease-driving functions in the nervous system.

Lab equipment:

  • Octet RH16 Protein Analysis System for high-throughput binding kinetics analyses using biolayer interferometry (BLI).
  • Cellink Bio X6 bioprinter for development of 3D cell culture models.
  • BioTek Cytation 5 multimode microscope and plate reader for comprehensive analysis of cellular parameters.
