The Albert and Debbie Taño Simulation Center is a world-class multidisciplinary training and research facility part of the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Our mission is to develop transformative medical simulation curricula for our students and community. We advance clinical skills training using a hands-on approach that emphasizes deliberate practice and mastery of competencies through simulation technology. The center focuses on producing educational research that demonstrates enhanced student performance, improves patient safety, promotes continuous quality improvement, and advances the use of technology in medical training. Additionally, we seek to enhance continuing and interdisciplinary medical education by partnering with our community affiliates and allied health partners.
Our state-of-the-art Simulation Center features twenty Clinical Skills and assessment rooms including two high-fidelity, multi-purpose simulation suites. It also houses two large procedural skills suites for demonstrations, simulation activities and didactic instruction. All Clinical Skills and assessment rooms, including the two high-fidelity, multi-purpose simulation suites, are equipped with pan-tilt-zoom cameras, a paging system and recording capabilities.
Our Standardized Patient (SP) program is a large component of the Medical Education curriculum that we provide to our students. SPs are “patient actors” who portray a patient’s story and personal affect; they are trained to simulate the signs and symptoms that a patient may display during a routine or specialized visit to their physician. SPs help our students connect what they learn in the classroom to real life situations that they will face in residency and beyond.
SPs are key to the successful training and assessment of our students. With the help of our outstanding SPs, we are able to provide quality educational experiences to our students.
The position is open seasonally and during peak times in our Simulation Center. Please visit HR Careers page to apply. If you do not see the position listed and would still like to apply, please contact our Standardized Patient Educator, Adriana Bautista at adbautis@fiu.edu for more information.
The Simulation center is available to external parties and student interest groups. To book the center as an external party, please use the following form:
Explore our wide variety of simulators, task trainers, and opportunities for hands-on learning through Standardized Patient interactions. Medical simulation provides an immersive, life-like experience in a safe, controlled environment, allowing learners to develop and refine their skills, build confidence, and gain competency—all without risk to real patients.
We invite educators and learners to take advantage of everything we offer. For more information about our equipment, contact us at comsimcenter@fiu.edu.
