2014 Student Art Contest

Hey Artists,

The Mammography Art Initiative is hosting a Student Art Show Competition.

The Mammography Art Initiative was established in 2011 to address the need for better access to information about breast health as well as affordable breast health services for low-income women in Miami. Through the fundraising efforts of the previous two years' art shows, we have been able to raise over $50,000 in funds and services to sponsor mammograms, follow up care and breast health workshops for hundreds of women in South Florida. At this year’s art show, we hope to raise $25,000 in order to continue to provide education, mammograms and follow-up care while also expanding our resources in order to encompass a variety of other women’s health issues, such as cervical cancer prevention and screening. Our show attracts a diverse audience of students and faculty, physicians in South Florida, philanthropists, and members of the Miami art community. Emerging and established artists donate the artwork; we also showcase and auction entries from our students as a student art contest. In addition, there is a silent auction, which provides local businesses with a unique opportunity to promote their products and services.

About the Competition:

The theme for The Mammography Art Initiative’s 3rd Annual Art Auction and Show is STRENGTH. This “strength” is the one shown by women worldwide in the face of breast cancer.  What does strength inspire in you?

Your entry must be created in physical media in 2-D format. Size is restricted to nothing over 36 inches x 36 inches.
Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:

  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
  • Collages: must be two dimensional
  • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.

Any student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at Florida International University is encouraged to enter a submission. Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted. Work entered must be in the original medium (that is, not a scanned reproduction of a painting or drawing).

  • Monetary or tangible prize will be announced in the future. Please check our website for more information.
  • Selected images will be seen by an audience of gallery directors, art collectors, art consultants and others who appreciate fine art. The winning entries will be exhibited and featured at the Frost Art Museum at our art show and then placed on our website’s Archives for additional viewing.
  • By being placed on the website, each artist will be able to show and promote their art, their artistic experience, along with their personal art website. In addition, the artist by being featured on the MAI website, will have backlinks to the artist’s website.
  • After the art show ends on October 11, 2014, the winning works of art will remain on the MAI website until the 2015 competition to be viewed and promoted by the artist through their personal art portfolio.
  • Last but definitely not least, your contribution will help fund breast health services and education to underserved women in Miami-Dade.
