About

Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine) was established in 2006, welcomed its first class of medical students in 2009, and achieved full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2013.

FIU Medicine has since become a leader in 21st-century medical education. Our internationally recognized Doctor of Medicine program integrates the science of medicine with the social determinants of health—both in the classroom and the community. Through our award-winning Green Family Foundation Neighborhood Health Education Learning Program, students provide team-based, household-centered care, gaining hands-on experience that prepares them to meet the real needs of patients and families.

We are ensuring our students' success with our Road to Residency program, which has garnered national recognition and attention. The Association of American Medical Colleges named our program the best in medical career advising in the country, recognizing it with a Careers in Medicine Excellence Award in 2024.

That same year, we launched a transformative academic alliance with Baptist Health South Florida, reinforcing FIU Medicine's role as a rising force in medical education. Building on this foundation, we established a groundbreaking partnership with Nicklaus Children's Health System and strengthened collaborations with the Miami VA Healthcare System and Leon Medical Centers. Together, these partnerships form a robust medical ecosystem that spans the full continuum of care—from pediatrics to geriatrics—enhancing medical education and attracting top physicians and researchers to South Florida.

FIU Medicine is poised to expand its impact with increased research funding and the construction of a new state-of-the-art clinical and medical education building in collaboration with Baptist Health. Backed by a historic $158 million investment from the state—the largest in FIU's history—this facility, set to open in 2028, will serve as a hub for education, discovery, and patient care.

As a sponsoring institution for ACGME-accredited programs in collaboration with Baptist Health and the Miami VA Healthcare System, we are expanding the physician workforce and addressing the critical physician shortage while giving students local opportunities to train and practice.

At the heart of our mission is service to the community. Whether by training physicians who understand the unique needs of South Florida's diverse population or advancing research in rare and complex diseases, FIU Medicine is building a legacy of innovation, compassion, and care for future generations.
