How to Apply
Your application for graduate study at Florida International University must be submitted online to the University Graduate School.  Do not submit application directly to the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

To begin your application, you must sign into your application user account with your User ID and Password.  All communications, including admissions decisions, from the Graduate Admissions Office will be sent to you via the email you provide on your application.  Please be sure to add to your safe senders list to ensure that you receive these communications.

You do not have to complete the application in one sitting and may make changes multiple times by signing into your user account.  Once you click on submit, however, the application will be delivered to the Graduate Admissions Office electronically and you will no longer have access to the application.

Application Deadline
The PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences admits students only in the Fall Term (August – December).  The deadline for applications is January 5 for both US and International applicants.  Application must be submitted before 5 PM EST on the deadline date.

Faculty Sponsorship (optional)
Acceptance to the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences requires the support of a Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine dissertation advisor who agrees to be your sponsor.

Before you apply, please review the research interests of dissertation advisors and identify faculty members whose research interests coincides with yours.  Contact those faculty members by email and inquire about the possibility of working with him/her as a doctoral student.   You may send your curriculum vitae and a statement of your research interest.  Explain why you would be a suitable addition to his/her lab.

Please note that not all faculty members accept students each year.  Most faculty exercise a limit to the number of students they may advise at a time.   Therefore, even if you are an outstanding applicant, it may not always be possible for your choice advisor to sponsor you.  Do not let that dampen your interest!  Please feel free to contact more than one faculty member.

When submitting your application, please upload a copy of the email from the faculty member who has agreed to be your sponsor.  Note that sponsorship does not automatically equate to admission to the program or to financial support.  It generally means that the faculty member is interested in taking new PhD students for the upcoming year.  Final decision to admit an applicant rests on the Admissions Committee and depends on several factors including, but not limited to, strong academic qualifications, interview performance, and availability of research assistantships/extramural fellowships.

Academic Qualification
You must have at least a bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, pharmaceutical or biomedical sciences from an accredited college in the United States or a comparable degree from a recognized institution of higher learning elsewhere.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) in the last 60-credits of an accredited undergraduate degree or an earned graduate degree is required.
