How to Apply

Students interested in applying to the Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine should create an FIU Graduate School user account and password before beginning their application.

Applications do not need to be completed in one session. Applicants may save the application and log in later to complete the process.

Applications are Closed

Applications are closed for the Fall 2024 semester.

A $30 nonrefundable fee is due at the time of application. Applications are only processed once the application fee has been received. Applicants may pay the fee online using a major credit card (Visa, Master Card, Discover, or American Express).

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have a graduate degree or bachelor's degree from an accredited college in the United States or a comparable degree from a recognized institution of higher learning or have a minimum 3.0 GPA (on a four-point scale) in the last 60 credits of their undergraduate degree.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must provide:

  • Three letters of recommendation attesting to an applicant's educational background, motivation, analytical skills, and promise as a research scientist. Recommendation letters must be written and submitted online by undergraduate advisors, research advisors, or professional colleagues. 
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Transcripts must come directly from the issuing institutions to FIU. Applicants who attended or are attending FIU do not need to submit an FIU transcript.
  • Submit an up-to-date resume/CV and a statement of purpose highlighting future goals after obtaining the Ph.D. degree.

*GRE scores for the 2024 application are waived.

Submitting Your Application

Only completed applications are reviewed by the admissions committee. Any missing documents should be sent as soon as possible. Applicants may check for missing items by logging into their FIU Graduate School account and checking the “To Do” list.

Applicants must submit their application materials through the application portal. Applications should not be submitted directly to the College of Medicine.

All communications, including admissions decisions, are sent via email. Applicants should ensure that their email settings allow communication from gradadm@fiu.edu.

Once the applicant submits their application, it is delivered to the FIU Graduate Admissions Office electronically, and the applicant no longer has access to it.
