PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences

The PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences at HWCOM aims to bridge basic sciences and medicine, fostering research to discover and advance medically relevant knowledge and leads to improvements in the quality of life for future generations.

The program aims to develop the ability of graduate students to apply research skills from bench to bedside, and to translate fundamental discoveries into new treatments for human diseases. The advantages of pursing a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at HWCOM include participation in cutting-edge biomedical research, close interaction with clinical and basic science faculty, and preparation for careers in academia, medical research, and biomedical and biotechnology industries. Another distinctive feature of the PhD program is that graduate students and medical students sit side-by-side in introductory basic sciences courses, participating in an interdisciplinary model of education.

Program faculty hold appointments in three basic science departments in HWCOM: Cellular Biology and Pharmacology, Human and Molecular Genetics, and Immunology. These faculty members train students to become part of the next generation of scientists working in the fields of biochemistry, cancer biology, cellular biology, human genetics, immunology, microbiology and infectious diseases, molecular biology, nanomedicine and noninvasive technologies, and imaging.

Program faculty are involved in research initiatives in several fields:

  • Environmental science and toxicology. Research focuses on arsenic detoxification mechanisms.
  • Immunology. Research focuses on developing an innovative technology that combines gene editing with targeted drug delivery and controlled release of therapeutic cargo to eliminate latent HIV infection, treat drug addiction, and treat other central nervous system diseases.
  • Genomic and molecular medicine. Research focuses on novel signaling pathways and development of drugs to more effectively diagnose and treat cancer.
  • Nanomedicine and noninvasive devices. Research focuses on the applications of nanotechnology to state-of-the-art treatments of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and HIV/AIDS.
  • Medical imaging. Research focuses on biophotonics, translational imaging applications, and noninvasive imaging technologies for diagnosis of disease, with an emphasis on retina and skin monitoring. Program faculty working in the field of medical imaging have expertise in the development of novel imaging modalities and modeling of light transport into biological media.
