In 2019, the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) once again recognized the HWCOM’s unique approach to medical education, which highlights social accountability and the social determinants of health. HWCOM is the first recipient of AMEE’s ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award for Inspirational Approaches to Health Professions Education.
In 2016, the Institute of Medicine report entitled "A Framework for Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social Determinants of Health" was released. HWCOM's curriculum was highlighted in this report as an example of a school successfully implementing a socially accountable curriculum.
Behind AAMC - In December 2016, HWCOM was selected by the AAMC as one of 8 medical schools to participate in the Health Equity Systems Cohort. This group of schools will work together on programs and curricula around the topic of "Building a Systems Approach to Community Health and Health Equity."
In 2016, HWCOM was awarded the Association for Medical Education in Europe ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award in Social Accountability. The award recognized the college’s effort to direct its education, research and service activities towards addressing the priority health needs of the community through innovations such as the Medicine and Society strand and NeighborhoodHELP.
HWCOM was one of 20 medical schools selected to join the American Medical Association Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium in 2015. Through the work of this consortium, the American Medical Association seeks to train physicians to respond effectively to the needs of patients in the changing landscape of health care and health care policy.
In 2014, HWCOM was one of ten medical schools selected for participation in an Association of American Medical Colleges pilot program. The 5-year pilot program is testing implementation of the Association of American Medical Colleges Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency.
The Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP initiative received the 2014 Sapphire Award from the Florida Blue Foundation for health nonprofits. The honor, which included a $60,000 award, recognizes programs that "have demonstrated leadership, success, high merit and impact improving access to health-related services for, or the health-related outcomes of, Florida's at-risk populations and communities."
In 2013, The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) granted accreditation with commendation to HWCOM as a provider of Continuing Medical Education (CME). ACCME accreditation with commendation means that HWCOM is among the top 25% of providers of continuing medical education in the United States.
The Florida Senate issued a resolution in 2013 recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of HWCOM, including its innovative curriculum, the Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP program, its identification and response to the critical health and social needs of Miami-Dade County, and its efforts to improve the quality of life of South Floridians.
The Florida House of Representatives issued a tribute in 2013 recognizing, commending and congratulating HWCOM for its outstanding accomplishments, the Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP Program, “an innovative curriculum that serves as a model for new medical schools around the country,” and for its “unwavering commitment to serving the community and educating future physicians in improving the health and quality of life of all Floridians.
The Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners proclaimed Tuesday, April 2, 2013 as FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Day in recognition of its mission to lead the next generation of medical education, to improve the quality of health care in South Florida, and for discovering innovations in science and the delivery of healthcare.
