Elena Kaftanovskaya, Ph.D., came to FIU from Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. At Baylor, she conducted studies to define the hormonal and genetic factors responsible for reproductive organ development. At the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, she was involved in mammalian chromosome gene mapping and the analysis of chromosomal behavior in mouse stem cells. From 2001 - 2008 she was a Research Scientist at the Laboratory of Freshwater Fish Stocks, Bioscience and Biotechnology Center of Nagoya University, Japan. At Nagoya, she developed a novel method of nuclear transplantation of adult somatic cells and embryonic cloning in small Japanese Medaka fish.
