Sahar Ajabshir, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor and course Co-Director at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Dr. Ajabshir has distinguished herself through her dedication to research, leadership and teaching. She has successfully focused her research on diagnosis and treatment of diabetes within different communities, based on their ethnic heritage and cultural practices. Dr. Ajabshir is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards such as the Levina Philips Leadership Award, Clara Augustine Public Health Award, Path Science Prize for Outstanding Paper, and Faculty Award for Advance Florida Network Women in STEM Scholars (AFN-WISS).

In keeping with her dedication to her field, Dr. Ajabshir have been taking multiple executive roles at national, state-wide, and university-wide levels such as the Executive Committee member of the American Society for Nutrition`s Vitamins and Minerals Research Interest Section (2015-2020), Vice-Chair of Early Career Nutrition Group, and Chair of the American Society for Nutrition`s Student Interest Group. In these positions, she has been helping with programming of the annual Nutrition conferences, co-chaired several scientific sessions across the country, led a group of judges across the globe, and developed the first ever strategic plan and operations manual for the American Society for Nutrition`s Student Interest Group. Dr. Ajabshir was selected as the lead judge for the American Society for Nutrition`s Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Competition for Vitamins and Minerals Section in 2018 as well a judge for the Young Minority Investigator Oral Competition. 

An advocate for student success, she served as the vice-chair of the Student Government Association`s graduate and professional student committee and was directly involved in allocating funds for more than 1,000 students to attend national and international conferences on behalf of FIU. Amongst them, the first group of medical students from the U.S. were enabled to go on a medical mission to Cuba. Most recently, Dr. Ajabshir was selected to serve as a committee member of the FIU 2025 strategic plan, Highest Research Committee, where she was nominated to serve as the Chair of Goals and Metrics Subcommittee focused on promotion of undergraduate student research. She lead a group who successfully developed a recommendation for enhancing undergraduate student`s research at FIU and beyond. In 2015, Dr. Ajabshir was selected to serve on the FIU BeyondPossible2020 Strategic plan, Grow Strategically committee.

Dr. Ajabshir received her Ph.D. and Masters degrees in Dietetics and Nutrition from Florida International University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Azad University in Iran. She completed her clinical training at Baptist Hospital of Miami.
