One of the core missions of the Mammography Art Initiative is education. We aim to improve health literacy and understanding of breast health and breast cancer in the greater Miami
We have a three-part strategy to attaining this goal:
- Identify those communities with a particular need for education.
- Understand the social and cultural contexts of each community and their implications on residents’ access to and understanding of information.
- Utilize diverse tools and resources to effectively tailor education to individual community’s needs.
Since its inception in 2011, the Mammography Art Initiative has vastly expanded its fundraising efforts to accommodate our rapidly growing clinical programs. Because we have received an overwhelming amount of support for our breast health education and clinical care efforts, we have been able to broaden our clinical services. Now, we are aiming to encompass a wider variety of women’s health issues, beyond just breast health, for underserved women in Miami-Dade County.
Using funds raised through the Mammography Art Initiative’s Annual Art Show, the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) sponsors services at various imaging centers throughout Miami-Dade County.
