Prospective Students

Process Overview

For more details see Applying to the College

For Regular Admissions, the process begins in June with the AMCAS application. Interviews are conducted from September through February.

Students seeking Early Decision at the FIU College of Medicine must apply by August 1 to only the FIU College of Medicine, by designating only the FIU College of Medicine on the AMCAS application.

The Florida International University College of Medicine (COM) will participate in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application process, and applications verified by AMCAS will be the first step in the COM applicant screening process.

Florida International University College of Medicine is committed to the education of students from the State of Florida seeking a doctor of medicine degree. Student applicants will not, however, be limited to candidates with Florida residency. However, only US Citizens, Canadian Citizens, and Permanent Residents will be considered.  Once the initial application is received the application will be reviewed for completeness by the Admissions Office.

Following the receipt and verification of the AMCAS application and its data, each applicant will be invited to complete a Secondary Application if they meet the minimum MCAT and GPA requirements (MCAT 25 and overall GPA 3.0, BCPM 3.0 for Regular Admissions; MCAT 32 and overall GPA 3.7, BCPM 3.0 for Early Decision). A $30 non-refundable application fee will be required with submission of the Secondary Application. The Secondary Application will provide additional insight into the applicant, focusing on issues such as the candidate's desire to become a physician, interest in medicine, commitment to Florida, and interest in FIU. This application will additionally include a description of the expectations of academically successful students at FIU.

The minimum criteria for interview at the FIU COM will include the following:

  1. Completion and receipt of the AMCAS formal application process
  2. Completion and receipt of the FIU COM Secondary Application
  3. Receipt of three (3) letters of recommendation
  4. AMCAS application verifying an MCAT score of 25 or higher for Regular Admission
  5. AMCAS application verifying an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher for Regular Admission
  6. AMCAS application verifying an overall BCPM of 3.0 or higher for Regular Admission
  7. AMCAS application listing personal experiences in several of the following – patient care exposure, research exposure, altruism, leadership, plus a strong interest in medicine
  8. AMCAS application listing no felonies

After the applicant is interviewed, the completed file will then be reviewed by a subcommittee which will present the application to the full Admission Committee. The Admissions Committee will then vote to accept the applicant, reject the applicant, or put him/her in the Final Pool. The Final Pool is then reviewed at a later date at which time the applicant may be accepted, rejected, or put on the Waitlist. An applicant may remain on the Waitlist up to the day of the FIU COM Orientation.
