Academic Advising
The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is committed to helping students achieve their academic and personal goals through quality academic advising. Academic advising provides students with:
- Periodic review of academic progress
- Planning for senior clinical rotations
- Guidance in choosing a specialty and a residency program
- Referral to support services, including tutoring and counseling
The four Panther Communities have dedicated academic advisors who meet with each student at least once a year to review overall academic performance, including progress in research and involvement in extracurricular activities such as leadership and community service. Additional meetings are held at key times in the curriculum, such as preparation for period 4, and as needed when students are experiencing academic difficulty. Academic advisors work with course and clerkship directors and with the Office of Student Affairs in helping students optimize their academic performance; advisors also assist the Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs with the preparation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation.
Academic advising is under the direction of Dr. Karin Esposito, the Associate Dean for Academic Advising and for Women in Medicine and Science, and reports to the Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
