South Florida's public medical school: a new engine of opportunity
The opening of Florida International University College of Medicine is the most significant event in our university's 43-year history and it marks a new day for the entire South Florida community. At last, South Florida has a public medical school - one that will educate badly-needed doctors for our own community and will lead the way in 21st Century medical education. In doing so, the FIU College of Medicine, promises to catapult our region into the scientific and economic activity that surrounds medical hubs throughout the nation.
The College of Medicine is expected to have a billion-dollar economic impact on Miami-Dade County, bringing thousands of jobs to the area and eventually contributing millions to state coffers every year.
By offering an affordable educational option close to home, FIU will make a medical education possible for some who may be limited by finances or family responsibilities. Also, our doctors will graduate with relatively little debt, which will allow many of them to practice family medicine and care for all segments of our diverse community. Perhaps the single most important benefit that we will derive from this new medical school is that it will become the single largest source of new doctors for our area, which is already seeing a worrisome shortage of physicians. Like current FIU students, our medical students will be largely from this community and they will want to practice in South Florida. We look forward to the support of all South Floridians as we lead the way in this multi-million dollar investment in our community, our health and our future.
