To improve health in Florida

To graduate physicians who understand and include non-biological factors in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients and communities

Message from the Chair
As the Founding Chair of the Department of Humanities, Health, and Society, I’d like to welcome you to our department’s website and to the Green Family Foundation Medicine and Society strand. Please refer to our curriculum handbook on the right. As you enter the world of medicine, we are here to expand your medical and social science knowledge to understand the true causes of disease - both biological and non-biological and to identify, study, and eventually resolve these causes. Although the United States spends more on health care than any other country, we have the poorest health outcomes in comparison to other industrialized nations. We are last in life expectancy and have the highest infant mortality rate. Racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequities in the health of our society are unconscionable.  We have become a medical nation that treats rather than prevent disease.  With our faculty, staff, fellow university colleagues, and community partners, we have created educational opportunities that are infused with learning and giving back to the community. South Florida is one of the most dynamic and culturally diverse regions in the United States, but it is an area with great poverty and health inequity. We care about the health needs and challenges of our communities. We are committed to improving the health outcomes of all populations by educating and preparing medical students to assess and incorporate the social determinants of health and the ethical dilemmas in the delivery of care. We also conduct research and analyze the individual and social conditions that contribute to improving health outcomes and the quality of life for South Florida's underserved communities. In collaboration with patients, interprofessional teams, and communities, we will accomplish our mission through excellent education, training, and research programs that promote a comprehensive approach to health care that includes the social determinants of health care access and outcomes.

I am delighted that you are browsing through our website and look forward to hearing from you. Let us make our world better. Peace.
